Today was really fun. We started off by playing with cookies. We had to extract as many chocolate chips from the chip ahoy's so that we can count the chips. The point of the lab was dealing with coal and how much you can make and lose if it is not done correctly. Our group did really good because we made a profit. The next part of the day was spent in the computer lab. We learned short cuts and various things on PowerPoint. I learned how to use the master slides better and I can teach my students. Also, Dr. B taught us how to make faster PPT. I like that idea for me, but I will not be teaching my students that short cut that can be confusing to them. After lunch we went over google maps and earth. I really enjoyed the instructor he did a good job of explaining how to label your map and maneuver in it. Then we did a tour in the Templeton music room upstairs we learned about different record players and so forth. Once we left the library we did an activity outside and it was interesting and the kids would love to do it they might be dizzy when they got through but they would understand seasons better. The last activity we did was a reading activity which involved us reading some short passages and picking out important phrases then putting them in a poem. That will help my students to comprehend what they read and also how to work as a group to come up with a poem The day was fun and I learned a lot that I can use in my class.
Today in the follow-up session we talked about how we are using the resources in our classroom. It was amazing how most people used the resources, but others had problems because of technology issues. Also, we went over how to write a grant. I always thought that writing a grants took hours to do, but the way Dr. Bracey explained it it seems a little a easier. I do plan to write one if I have time. I really like that idea from Yokohama and the gym equipment. We really need something for our children to exercise on an getting outdoor exercise equipment along with the the track we have would be wonderful. At the end of the day we learn about code. I plan to use some of the activities in the book. We are suppose to be train later because ICT 1 will be moved to 6th grade. I think this is a wonderful program and it will help the students learn more about computer science. Maybe it will encourage girls to get involve in computer science and maybe choose a profession in it.
